Gundula Proksch is a scholar, registered architect and Associate Professor of Architecture and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington. In her research, professional work and teaching she explores interdisciplinary practices in the built environment, novel approaches in sustainable design, and their potential to positively shape the futures of cities.
Her current research investigates sustainable infrastructure for cities, especially those that apply living systems to manage flows of water, energy, and waste. Her book Creating Urban Agricultural Systems: An Integrated Approach to Design (Routledge) is the first source book on how to approach urban agriculture from a systems perspective. It explores how urban farms provide integrated environmental systems, innovative operational strategies and design approaches to create environmentally sound and economically viable urban agricultural operations.
Professor Proksch’s professional experience spans fifteen years of practice in Europe and the United States. Before her appointment to the faculty of the UW, she practiced with renowned architects such as David Chipperfield in London and Richard Meier, Stan Allen and Roger Duffy (of SOM) in New York. She worked in leading roles on the design of high profile projects including institutional buildings, urban design proposals and landscape projects.
In her own architectural practice, she has received recognition in several international design competitions where she has integrated her research with professional practice. Her award-wining entry for the Living City Design Competition “Growing Urbanism,” which envisions a new ecological urbanism, has been widely exhibited and published in Now Urbanism: The New City is Here (Routledge). She also contributes her professional design expertise to civic and professional organizations, among others through her tenure on the Seattle Downtown Design Review Board and as juror and moderator of AIA Honor Awards programs.
Professor Proksch holds a Master of Architecture from Cornell University and a master-level degree from the Technical University Braunschweig in Germany. She received a DAAD scholarship for independent research at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich in Switzerland.
